Storing my “kit”

07.07.2009 by Ray Niekamp // 4 Comments

That Halo headband I mentioned in the last post is just the latest in my collection of biking accoutrements (I’m trying to stay with the spirit of the Tour, you know). But as such, it’s contributing to a problem that’s been building for some time: I’m running out of space for it all.

When I started biking, I dedicated one drawer of my dresser to bike clothes. I already had some running stuff in there, like shorts, t-shirts, and socks. The thin jerseys didn’t take up too much more space — at first. But then I got a couple more jerseys, and the bibs take up more space than the shorts, and now it’s getting out of control.

DresserI have an embarrassment of cycling riches — but no place left to put them.

I’ve culled out a lot of the running stuff, since I don’t run anymore. I still find that I need an Alternate Plan B. I just have no idea what it will be. I know some folks who hang their jerseys and shorts — from hangars, in closets. That would be nice, if I had any available closet space. I would have loved to take all those things that we’re waiting to shrink back into and store them in the basement until that time comes. But we live in Texas, and they don’t build houses with basements down here.

So I’m looking for some advice from my astute readers. How do you store your cycling kit? Where? As John Stewart would say — help a brother (cyclist) out.

Only one drawer? Heck, I have an entire dresser dedicated to cycling clothes, along with part of my closet with my jackets hanging there. (good thing my daughter graduated and moved out so I have the extra room to set up my bike for off season training.) Drawer 1 – sports bras and socks; Drawer 2 – arm/leg warmers, tights, gloves, hats, etc; Drawer 3 – shorts and bibs; Drawer 4 – short sleeved jerseys; Drawer 5 – long sleeved shirts and base layer shirts. (my drawer is about the same size as yours.) I’m one of the few women that spend very little on clothes and shoes, and more money on cycling apparel and gear. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Since I’m truly a noob, I only have a few pieces of cycling clothing. Because cycling stuff is relatively expensive, I try to pick up a new item only when I need it. I’m sure fall will bring the addition of a warmer jersey and maybe some tights. But for now, I haven’t run into the space issue just yet!

Floorboard of truck, or hanging/draped all over laundry room as they drip dry.

BTW, the clearance rack at Performance is a good place to look for budget conscious cyclist. Can’t fathom ever spending the kind of $$ for gear that LiveStrong or MJ’s command.

I’d add eBay as a place to get a good deal. I’ve gotten numerous Pearl Izumi items, brand new with tags from reputable sellers, for less than half the retail price. Deals are okay now, but great in the winter if you can plan ahead. I’d love to support my local bike shop more, but the prices are tough, especially when you’re trying to build up a collection of gear.

I have yet to see a deal on anything from Mellow Johnny’s, however…a bummer since I would love just one!
