Biking Thru Buescher

09.08.2011 by Ray Niekamp // Leave a Comment

Buescher State Park is a few miles down the road from Bastrop State Park, the one burned by our forest fires. Both parks are connected by a park road that carries more bikes than cars. Bike Noob reader Mike Watts sent along a video he took of he and some friends cycling through Buescher.

And since I have mentioned the Austin Veloway so often in posts on this blog, I thought I’d take Mike up on his additional offer of a video that features the bike track. In real time, it would take 10-11 minutes to get around the three-mile track, so this four minute clip shows just some highlights of an early morning ride.

If you’d like one of your videos featured on this blog, send me an email (see Contact) and point me to it. I’d like to spotlight some good biking scenes from time to time.

Biking Videos

08.16.2011 by Ray Niekamp // 4 Comments

I watch a lot of videos pertaining to biking — not so much the pro cyclists, although I watch those too, even when it’s not Tour de France time. But I prefer to watch videos about everyday folks who like to do the same things you and I do: ride our bikes.

The first video was called to my attention to promote the Marfa 100, a ride out in the funky west Texas town of Marfa, which benefits the public radio station out there and the Livestrong Foundation.

The next video was created by our frequent guest poster Jeff Hemmel. Although Jeff lives in Florida, he spends part of every summer in the Adirondacks of upstate New York, enjoying the cooler weather and the hillier cycling terrain. Here’s a look at the countryside he frequently travels.

I’m open to showing others’ videos on this site — but they must be about biking, and I won’t take just any poorly-executed video that’s shot as an afterthought. So get out there with your camcorders, run the video through an editing program, and send me a link to it. Whether I continue this feature depends upon your reaction to it.

Online bike videos

10.22.2009 by Ray Niekamp // 4 Comments

In this age of easily accessible online videos, we bikers can take advantage of a wide selection of videos to cover nearly all of our biking interests. Sometimes, reading about something isn’t enough. We have to see it to learn from it.

A simple search for bike videos will connect you with all sorts of videos. But there’s a built-in caveat when accessing them: their quality varies widely. Some are pretty well done. Some are pretty useless. Some are so poorly shot and edited that even if the information is good, they’re not much fun to watch.

So, what’s out there?

Here’s one from Expert Village.com on YouTube. Judge for yourself:

Lots of YouTube videos can be accessed in “high quality,” which means your video fills a larger window in your web browser. Some videos are shot in high definition, which makes them nice and sharp.

If you’re interested in doing your own maintenance, search for videos on that topic. You’ll find plenty. If you want tips on improving your riding technique, try going to Chris Carmichael’s Nissan-sponsored site, “Master the Shift.” His stuff isn’t bad, as one would hope. Try this link for starters:

It’s easy to kill a lot of time watching biking videos, but I’ve found that if I do a good search, I’m paid off in good results. Most video posters realize that people don’t like to watch long clips, so you’ll find a lot of videos of less than three minutes.

If you’ve already been watch bike videos online, maybe you’d like to recommend some clips — or entire sites — for the rest of us.
